LVG: Depay was about to sign for PSG

LVG - Depay was about to sign for PSG

Manchester United F.C. manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he signed Memphis Depay from Dutch Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven before the end of the season to prevent the player from joining Paris Saint-Germain.

The Holland international, 21, will officially move to United for a rumoured fee of €30 million when the transfer window re-open in July, having agreed a four-year deal with the Red Devils.

“I have been forced to sign him,” said Van Gaal during his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

“I didn’t want to sign him before the end of the season because we have to focus on our games. When you sign a player, you disturb the focus of your present group of players.

“The coming matches are very important for all of the players. But because of the market, I had to handle it, otherwise he would have signed for Paris Saint-Germain.

“When he was about to sign for PSG, he had not been reached by me. I don’t want to speak with players before the season is over. I have a feeling towards my players.

“But because of the close relationships that I have with the management of PSV, I could handle it.”

Depay, who tallied two goals and one assist in four appearances for Holland at the World Cup in Brazil last summer, has scored 27 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for PSV this season.

Monk to hold talks with Michu

Swansea City boss Garry Monk will hold talks with Michu at the end of the season in an attempt to determine the player’s long-term future.

Michu, 29, has suffered through a dismal season-long loan at Napoli, having failed to find the back of the net in five appearances for the Partenopei.

“Michu is still a Swansea City player and we have obviously monitored his progress there and how he’s got on,” Monk said.

“What I’ve tried to do with that situation is just allow him to concentrate on his football where he is. That was the decision that both of us took in the summer.

“I’ll sit down with him as soon as the season finishes and I’ll speak to him then about his future, and how best to go about it for himself and the future of the club.”

In two seasons at the Liberty Stadium, Michu, who joined the Swansea from Rayo Vallecano £2 million in the summer of 2012, has posted tallies of 28 goals and seven assists in 67 games for the Swans.
