Lyon players Cris and Juninho were fined 10,000 and 15,000 euros respectively for deliberately committing fouls to receive yellow cards, European football's governing body UEFA said on Thursday.
The bookings in the 2-1 win at Fiorentina last month meant the two players missed Wednesday's 3-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich which had little riding on it as both teams had qualified for the Champions League knockout phase.
UEFA said in a statement: “The two Lyon players Cris and Juninho have been fined 10,000 and 15,000 euros respectively for deliberately committing fouls in order to get yellow cards.
“As these two players had already been booked during the group phase, it meant they were suspended on Wednesday for the 3-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich. They have three days to appeal the decision.”
The two Brazilians had said after the match in Italy to have worked it that a third yellow card would purge a suspension meaning they started again at zero for next year's last 16 knockout stage, knowing Lyon had already qualified.
