Lyon were the first team to book their place in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals after beating Bayern Munich 4-1 at the Groupama Stadium, earning a 6-1 aggregate victory.

Having trailed at the break, Lyon scored three goals in 14 second-half minutes to turn the game on its head, before Ada Hegerberg sealed their progression in the closing stages.

After a positive start to the game, Bayern took a deserved lead in the 33rd minute when an intricate move on the edge of the box ended with Klara Buhl sending a left-footed strike beyond Christiane Endler, and in off the post.

Lyon boss Joe Montemurro cut a frustrated figure when the whistle blew for half-time, but his words at the break seemed to inspire his players to roar back in the contest.

And, with just 27 seconds of the second half played, the French champions levelled the game through Melchie Dumornay’s header from Kadidiatou Diani’s delivery.

Diani then put Lyon further ahead on aggregate eight minutes later, capitalising on a loose touch in the box from Giulia Gwinn, before finishing past Maria Grohs.

The result was put beyond doubt on the hour mark after a fine free-flowing counter-attack saw Dinani involved once again, this time playing the ball across the box for Tabitha Chawinga to stroke into the back of the net.

Hegerberg added further gloss to the scoreline in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, as she poked the ball through the legs of the onrushing Endler.

Data Debrief: Eight-time winners out for more history

Lyon have now won four of their five Champions League games against Bayern, and they were deserving of their victory that keeps their quest for a record-extending ninth title alive.

They ended the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.59 from 19 shots to their opponents’ 0.68 from 10 efforts, only one of which was on target.

But their triumph was led by Diani, who grabbed a goal and two assists during the contest. She recorded a team-high eight touches in the opposition box, while the three chances she created was a total only bettered by full-back Selma Bacha (five).
