Lyon sign Steed Malbranque

French giants Lyon have announced on their official website that they have signed midfielder Steed Malbranque on a free transfer.

The veteran midfielder has signed a one-year deal with les Gones and he could be handed a debut in Lyon’s next Ligue 1 game against Valenciennes.

The 32-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Saint Etienne last summer, just a couple of weeks after arriving at Stade Geoffroy Guihard from Sunderland.

Malbranque has been training with Lyon for over a month now and the club chiefs decided to offer him a one-year contract after playmaker Yoann Gourcuff picked up a serious injury.

The highly rated midfielder began his career at Gerland and amassed 77 Ligue 1 appearances for the club before joining Fulham in a €6.6 million deal in the summer of 2001.

Malbranque also enjoyed spells with Tottenham and Sunderland before deciding to return to France last summer.
