Maguire holding ´positive´ contract extension talks with Man Utd

Harry Maguire says he is holding “positive” discussions with Manchester United about extending his contract at Old Trafford.

The defender, who joined Man Utd from Leicester City in 2019, is into the final year of his existing contract with the Red Devils.

Maguire has started just five Premier League games this season, though he did play the full 90 minutes of the derby victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

The 31-year-old is feeling optimistic about the prospect of extending his stay with the club.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” he said. “I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands.

“But all the signs are positive at the moment, and the chat that I’m having is really positive.”

Maguire also addressed the impact of Ruben Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout last month.

The centre-half believes the Red Devils made a statement with their dramatic 2-1 win over City, and hopes it will serve as a launchpad.

“I think you can see we have a good structure, a good style of play, the way that he wants us to work,” he added.

“He is very good tactically. He’s proven that he’s a winner. We’re still pretty new. I think he’s been here a month now or so, and we’re really looking forward to where we can go and where we can take this club, and I’m sure he’ll take it in a positive way.

“Obviously, we had back-to-back defeats in the Premier League [against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest], so to come to City and to put a statement down is really important for our confidence and the belief of where we’re going and where Ruben’s going to take us.”
