AZ Alkmaar midfielder Adam Maher has opted to represent the Netherlands rather than the homeland of his father – Morocco.

The 18-year-old is eligible for both countries, and had yet to make a decision about his international future.

However, Maher has now decided to feature for the 2010 World Cup finalists as he targets a spot in their Euro 2012 squad after being included in the preliminary group.

“If the coach needs me at Euro 2012, I will be ready. It’s good for my personal development to play World Cups and European championships,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I’m making a lot of progress when I’m surrounded by these players.

“I will also choose for Oranje if I don’t make the squad for Euro 2012. The only difference is that I don’t have to make it official yet in that case.

“I’ve discussed this with my family, and I think this is the best solution for me.”

Maher follows in the footsteps of players such as Ibrahim Afellay and Khalid Boulahrouz, who also chose the Netherlands over Morocco.
