Inter Milan’s Brazil full-back Maicon should get a contract extension after snubbing a move to Real Madrid, his agent Antonio Caliendo suggested on Tuesday.
On Monday Inter president Massimo Moratti declared that Maicon was off the transfer list following weeks of speculation that he would join former boss Jose Mourinho in Spain.
Inter and Real are believed to have failed to come to an agreement over the 29-year-old’s price tag.
And speaking to Italian news agency Ansa, Caliendo hinted that he felt the right-back should be rewarded for his loyalty.
“I believe Maicon should get a minimum of recognition,” he said when asked if the Brazilian deserves a contract extension like Argentine team-mates Diego Milito and Javier Zanetti.
“I was just with the player and he told me: ‘after five titles Moratti has finally realised he has a champion at the club’.”
Despite his angling for a new deal, Caliendo expressed his belief that Maicon will regardless stay in Milan.
“Given what Moratti said I think he (will stay), now I think (Moratti) will tell him in person.”
Maicon is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world and scored a sensational goal from an acute angle for Brazil against North Korea during the World Cup in South Africa.
