(GSM) – Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino has said that Mallorca’s Europa League ban could be a pivotal point as they look to curb overspending in clubs.
Infantino said on Friday the Primera Liga club’s case demonstrates the effectiveness of Uefa’s new campaign to control splurging on players, after introducing new financial fair play rules and an expert panel to monitor teams.
The general secretary accepted that Mallorca supporters were upset because their club has been excluded from European competitions after going into financial administration at the end of last term.
But he believes the decision displays to fans throughout Europe that Uefa are fair to clubs that abide by the regulations.
Mallorca’s appeal against the exclusion was rejected by Uefa last month, but the club can still appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
