(GSM) – UEFA will decide on Thursday if Spanish side Mallorca will be allowed to take part in the 2010-11 Europa League due to continued financial issues surrounding the club.
Mallorca qualified for the play-off round of the Europa League due to a fifth-place finish in La Liga last season, but only cup holders Atlético Madrid and sixth-placed side Getafe have been guaranteed berths from Spain.
Creditors have constantly dogged the club for failing to pay back debts to other clubs, and the island side have even been subject to litigation for failed payments to players.
In addition, UEFA is yet to approve Mallorca’s ONO Estadi for European football, another reason UEFA could choose to revoke the club’s license and hand over their European berth to another club.
If UEFA decide to remove Mallorca from the competition, it is likely that Villarreal – who finished seventh last season – would be drafted into the fold for the tournament.
