A Romanian man has been charged with assault after breaking the cheekbone of Steaua Bucharest defender George Galamaz during a match.

The man invaded the pitch during the first half of Steaua’s away match with Petrolul Ploiesti on Sunday and struck Galamaz to the head while Steaua were preparing to take a penalty.

The match had to be abandoned before half-time after more crowd trouble, and Steaua goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu received burns when he was struck by a flare.

“He (Galamaz) suffered a cheekbone fracture and will be recovering for six weeks,” Steaua sporting director Narcis Raducan said.

Ploiesti fan Dragos Petrut Enache was arrested by police after the incident and charged with assault.

The attack on Galamaz caused furious Steaua players to start retaliating, with both Razvan Stanca and Novak Martinovic sent off, the latter for kicking Enache while he lay on the ground.
