RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has been linked with several big clubs across Europe as he enters the final 18 months of his contract in January, such as Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Arsenal. Now, however, Mirror believe Manchester City have not only entered the fray, but jumped to the front of the queue.
The Premier League champions are haveing some serious problems at the heart of defence this season. Pep Guardiola apparently has very strict demands when it comes to player recruitment, which is why the club did not act following the departure of former captain Vincent Kompany during the summer. That decision seems to have come back to haunt them with Aymeric Laporte out for a large part of the season and John Stones occasionally suffering from minor injuries. Guardiola has utilized 35-year-old midfielder Fernandinho in the role next to Nicolas Otamendi, but City have now fallen nine points behind title-chasing Liverpool.
Should the club choose to act in January, they’re likely to go for Upamecano over Ruben Dias of Benfica who has been their target as well, simply because of Upamecano’s contract situation.
