Manchester City may be set to launch an audacious bid for Argentine duo Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona after board member Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim revealed he would love to work with both at the club.
City are rumoured to be preparing a world-record £100 million bid for Barcelona star Messi, according to the Sun newspaper. The move comes after the failure to capture Brazilian and AC Milan star Kaka for whom a supposed £91 million bid was launched back in January.
Al-Fahim has revealed that he would love to see Messi at the club, along with Argentina coach Diego Maradona in a presidential role, admitting that he admired the former Napoli star during his glory years.
Al-Fahim told press: “I do not know if Maradona will be a good coach. What I believe is that he should be the president of a club and have the right to choose and buy players.”
“In Naples he started from scratch and built a great club. He has the power to change a football team.”
On the subject of Messi he said: “Messi is a player that makes me love Argentina again.”
Top stars like Messi have always been linked with the club since the takeover from the Abu Dhabi United Group in September of last year, though it is unlikely that Messi will want to leave a club where he is playing the best football of his life.
Dr. Sulaiman Al-Fahim was set to become chairman of Manchester City when the Abu Dhabi United Group began negotiations to take over the club before his comments about building a star team lead to negative media towards the takeover, thus earning Khaldoon Al Mubark the role instead.
