Man-of-the-match award means nothing, says Mellberg

Olof Mellberg was forced to attend a post-match press conference to accept his man-of-the-match award following Sweden’s exit from Euro 2012.

The ex-Aston Villa centre-back scored, and caused Glen Johnson to bundle the ball into his own net for Sweden’s second in the 3-2 loss to England on Friday.

The Swede thanked the press for nominating him for the award, but made no secret of the fact he would rather have been taking three points home.

“It means nothing this award,” the defender said.

“It feels strange to win something when you lose and go home. Thanks for choosing me but it is hard to accept when we have been eliminated.”

England’s win has put them level on points with France at the top of Group D.
