Manchester United had the opportunity to sign Alphonso Davies, now at Bayern Munich, for a bargain-price fee of around £2 million, according to Paul Joyce of The Times.
The 19-year-old winger arrived to Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps for just under £12m in January 2019, but before that he was discovered by United’s scouting team. Apparently the deal was close to completion back in the summer of 2017, but the 20-time English champions simply didn’t act decisively enough and it fell through. United later tried to get him to join their training camp on a two-week trial, but that move was blocked by the Vancouver side and he was also called up to join the Canada U-23 team at the same time.
The following summer (2018), a bidding competition arose between the two European heavyweights which was eventually won by the Bundesliga champions. Bayern obviously got a great deal on a player destined to become a star in the future.
