Since Ralf Rangnick was appointed Manchester United manager for the remaining part of the season, speculation about which player the 20-time European champions would target has been running high. Among the latest stories on the subject is one coming from Bild, who claim United are preparing to swoop for Chelsea forward Timo Werner.
Werner arrived to Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2020, where he indeed worked with Rangnick, so there’s no doubt about the newly appointed United boss knowing him well. It can also be said that things aren’t exactly going Werner’s way at Stamford Bridge – he isn’t scoring nearly as often as many thought he would, and he’s far from being a regular starter for the Blues under Thomas Tuchel. Having missed three through injury, the 25-year-old was named in the squad for a Premier League match on 10 occasions this term, five as a starter. Three times he was introduced as a substitute, and he sat out two games on the bench completely.
However, even if United do contact Chelsea over the Germany international, it isn’t very likely the Blues would be open to a sale to a Premier League rival, particularly with the fact that Werner’s contract has three and a half years left to run.
