Manchester United want to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona in January to replace the departing Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Sport.
Depay has, of course, already played for the 20-time English champions, having arrived at Old Trafford back in 2015 when current Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal sat in the dugout there. He made a total of 53 appearances for United, scoring just seven goals and providing six assists. Van Gaal was replaced by Jose Mourinho in 2016, and the Portuguese tactician named Depay to start only once, in a League Cup win over fourth-tier side Northampton Town before shipping him off to Olympique Lyon the following summer.
The Dutch international left Lyon for Barcelona as a free agent in 2021 and had a very decent first season at Camp Nou, but this term, following the arrival of former Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, coach Xavi Hernandez hasn’t been giving Depay chances on a regular basis.
The 28-year-old forward runs out of contract at the end of the season, and if United take concrete step towards bringing him back this winter, it’s hard to imagine Barcelona resisting very hard.
