Manchester United have been linked with Dimitar Berbatov for the better part of the last year and last Friday, the rumours picked up again when it emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson made a £20 million bid for the Bulgarian. Now the Daily Mail reveals that the two clubs have reached an agreement regarding a transfer fee.
The report states that Manchester United followed up their rejected £20 million bid with another final offer of £25 million. However, as it turns out, their final offer was not final enough as Tottenham demanded a fee closer to £30 million. As a consequence Manchester United agreed to pay Tottenham £28 million for their striker.
However that deal will not be concluded until Tottenham find a replacement for Berbatov. They have added Andrei Arshavin to their shortlist and are also keen on Roque Santa Cruz according to the same report.
Should Manchester United finalize the £28 million transfer for Berbatov, he will become one of their most expensive players of all time. Rio Ferdinand arrived from Leeds for £30 million, Juan Sebastian Veron joined from Lazio for £28 million while Wayne Rooney cost Sir Alex a cool £27 million after clauses.
Manchester United and Tottenham have done business in the past. Michael Carrick was the latest player to swap White Hart Lane for Old Trafford after he joined in 2006 for an initial fee of £14 million.
