Manchester United are rumoured to be in the chase for Russian and CSKA Moscow star Igor Akinfeev, although the English champions have been rocked by the clubs £25 million valuation of their captain.
The Russian keeper is thought to be high on Sir Alex Ferguson’s list for a long-term replacement for Edwin Van der Sar, despite the presence of Tomasz Kuszczak and England keeper Ben Foster at Old Trafford.
Akinfeev impressed during his sides recent clashes against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League recently, and with CSKA in danger of missing out on European qualification this year it is believed that a move away from the Luzhniki Stadium.
The signing of Akinfeev is likely to see the depature of Ben Foster who recently expressed his frustration at the lack of first team football, despite being back by Ferguson.
Foster is aiming for a spot in England’s World Cup squad in South Africa next year, but to do so he will have to be playing first-team football and may ask for a loan move to ensure he is chosen.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is said to be in the hunt for a replacement keeper after Craig Gordon has been ruled out with a broken arm, and it is likely Foster will emerge on his shortlist should the England international be allowed to leave Old Trafford.
