Il Corriere dello Sport has learned that Manchester United failed in their attempts to recruit Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
The 24-year-old made an instant impact at Stadio San Paolo after joining from Genk and he didn’t need a lot of time to attract interest from abroad.
Manchester United were keen on luring him to Old Trafford in the January transfer window and it has now been revealed that they even submitted an official proposal some three days before the transfer window was about to shut.
However, a €20 million offer was swiftly rejected by the Azzurri, who see the Senegalese as an important member of the squad in years to come.
To illustrate their trust in Koulibaly, Napoli officials have offered the highly rated defender a two-year contract extension and the new deal until June 2020 is expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
The Azzurri face Villarreal in the Europa League first knockout stage later today and they can be backed at 23/10 to win at El Madrigal.
