Manchester City made it 12 consecutive wins in all competitions last night, a club record, when they beat bottom of the table Sheffield United at the Etihad. The win confirms their status as the leading contenders in the title race as this incredible Premier League season goes on.
With Liverpool being set to take on West Ham United later today, this was the sort of statement-making win that proved City are still the team to catch as one of the strangest top flight seasons in recent memory continues.
Jesus is back
He may not be the top scorer in the league this season but one thing is for sure – Gabriel Jesus is starting to regain his confidence again. From the manner in which he instinctively opened the scoring to his grit and determination throughout the course of the game as a whole, this is the Jesus that Pep Guardiola needs to see back in his starting XI. If he can keep this up, City will be in a very strong position heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
Hope lingers for Blades
They may still struggle to make the sort of impact they desire in most games, but the win over Manchester United and their ability to hold City to just one goal should be cause for optimism for Sheffield United fans. They’re only 10 points off of 17th place and even though that sounds like quite a substantial margin at the half way stage of the season, Chris Wilder knows his teams can win games – and he knows that many think they’re already relegated.
Champions elect?
Manchester City are the clear and obvious favourites to win the Premier League title this season in the eyes of many, including bookmakers. They are 2/9 to take home the crown with 888sport and while they’ll want to blow every single team they play out of the water, sometimes you have to settle for a gritty performance against a side who are desperate for points down at the bottom of the table. City are on fire right now, and that isn’t likely to change based on the recent evidence they’ve produced.
