While they might have had to go about things the long way on Wednesday night, Manchester City successfully avoided what would have been an infamous Champions League exit.

Opening their group stage finale remarkably sat outside the play-off places, Pep Guardiola’s men had a huge amount of pressure on their shoulders in the blue half of Manchester.

However, the Etihad was left stunned on Wednesday night as Raphael Onyedika gave Club Brugge a shock lead just seconds before the half-time break.

Marking their return from the interval knowing that their European dreams were hanging by a thread, the Sky Blues nothing short of a complete turnaround would be enough to save their blushes.

With Guardiola electing to alter his tactics during the interval, City didn’t take long to drag themselves level as ex-Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic swept home from the edge of the box.

Watching Joel Ordonez turn into his own net following Josko Gvardiol’s cross, City officially settled the Etihad nerves as Saving’s low effort found a way past former Liverpool shot-stopper Simon Mignolet.

However, while the Sky Blues might have dragged themselves to a play-off ticket, a heavyweight showdown against either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid is waiting in the wings.

On a night when Manchester City produced a crucial Champions League comeback, we have taken a look at the key talking points from the Etihad.

City avoid Champions League humiliation

Languishing 12 points adrift of Liverpool in this season’s Premier League title chase, it is no secret that Guardiola’s men have placed all of their eggs in the European basket.

Storming their way to an eye-catching 3-1 victory against Chelsea last weekend, the former Barcelona boss was certainly hoping for a similar dominant display here.

Despite suffering an infamous collapse away at PSG last week as they slumped to a 4-2 defeat in the French capital, that is the only loss that City have suffered from their previous nine appearances across all competitions.

Dragging themselves over the finishing line here and saving their blushes, Man City will take plenty of solace from their recent success on home soil.

Getting the New Year underway with a routine 4-1 romp against West Ham, Guardiola’s side have now won all of their last four matchups at the Etihad by an aggregate score of 18-3.

Guardiola still searching for defensive steel

While Manchester City might have recently found a clinical edge in the final third, the Sky Blues are desperately seeking some much-needed stability at the other end of the pitch.

Entering the half-time break here chasing a 1-0 deficit and with Club Brugge often cutting them open at the back, Guardiola will have a major headache over his side’s defensive struggles.

Still unable to call upon the likes of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, the Spanish tactician has been constantly trying to find a way to plug City’s rather glaring defensive frailties.

Coming under real scrutiny over in Paris on January 22nd as they slumped to that 4-2 loss against PSG, Wednesday’s hosts have recorded just a trio of clean sheets from any of their previous 13 appearances across all competitions.

Likewise, including a woeful 4-1 drumming against Sporting Lisbon on November 5th, City conceded 14 goals in their final five group stage showdowns.

Brugge miss out on an iconic scalp

Eventually dragging themselves to the final Champions League play-off spot on Wednesday night, Club Brugge will certainly look at their trip to Manchester as a mission completed.

However, although the Belgium giants might have gained a reputation for their rugged approach on the European stage this season, Nicky Hayen’s side would have been frustrated by a real second-half collapse here.

Missing out on the chance to claim what would have been remembered as one of the most iconic results in their history, Wednesday’s guests have shown some extended issues outside of Bruges.

Including a 3-1 loss away at Italian heavyweights AC Milan on October 22nd, Hayen’s camp have won just a pair of their previous 10 Champions League showdowns away from the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Dragging themselves out of the group stage as one of the unseeded clubs, Brugge will be more than aware that one of Europe’s heavy hitters will be on the cards for next month.
