According to multiple sources, Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea when the transfer window opens at the start of July. The 2022/23 treble winners are expected to pay £25 million straight up, and another £5 million through reasonably achievable add-ons, for the services of the 29-year-old Croatia international.
It remains to be seen what exactly the imminent arrival of the experienced midfielder to the Etihad means, regarding the future of Ilkay Gundogan or Bernardo Silva. The two stalwarts of Pep Guardiola’s team have both been linked with departure, with Gundogan out of contract and plenty of interest in Silva from other top European clubs.
It is, of course, thought more likely for Gundogan to leave – the Germany international still hasn’t given any indication of whether he’ll accept the club’s offer of a new deal.
Kovacic joined Chelsea in 2018, initially on loan from Real Madrid, and the transfer was made permanent a year later. In all competitions, he’s made a total of 221 appearances for the Blues, helping them win the 2019 Europa League and the 2021 Champions League, followed by the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
