According to multiple sources, both Real Madrid and Manchester City are interested in getting Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso to take charge of their respective teams at the end of the season.
This is hardly the first time top clubs have been reported to hold interest in the former Spain midfielder. There was plenty of speculation on the subject last summer, when Liverpool and Bayern Munich were said to be in the race. Now, however, with both those clubs settled on that front and topping their leagues under Arne Slot and Vincent Kompany, others are unsurprisingly linked.
Manchester City seem to be the most serious option at the moment. The reigning Premier League champions are apparently preparing for the eventuality of Pep Guardiola leaving as his contract expires at the end of the season. On the other hand, Carlo Ancelotti is bound to Real Madrid until the summer of 2026, and should Los Blancos step their interest in Alonso up, it would be interesting to see how they resolve their parting of ways with the 65-year-old Italian tactician.
