Manchester City have submitted an official proposal for Estudiantes midfielder Joaquin Correa, according to Sportitalia.
The talented footballer was believed to be on the verge of joining Benfica, that is until the Citizens stepped in.
Sportitalia has now suggested that Manchester City have emerged as favourites to land the 20-year-old, having offered €10 million ahead of the January transfer window.
Should they succeed in their quest to sign the Argentine, the Citizens will immediately loan him to Sampdoria, where he will have a chance to adapt to European football before he moves to the Emirates.
And while Benfica remain keen on the highly rated youngster, it is perfectly clear the Eagles will not be able to compete with their wealthier rivals.
Joaquin Correa came through the youth ranks at Estudiantes and has already amassed 53 league appearances, scoring three goals in the process. The youngster nailed down a regular starting berth over a year ago.
