Manchester City fans need to have a word with themselves

The saying that money changes people now seems to apply to football fans.

I always thought that Manchester City fans were some of the best in the country, that was until recently when a minority of them started thinking they were superior to everybody else.

Fantastic

Manchester City now have a superb team full of top players and their fans should be proud of their team. I don’t care if they have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on the players. The majority of good Manchester City fans deserve it.

Minority

However there is a small group of fans who now think because City have beaten Manchester United they can slag off the fans of every other club in England. I read a comment from a City fan having a go at Bolton a few days ago and it was unprovoked and it wasn’t the only one. There were numerous digs at other clubs for playing a certain style or clubs having no money (a bit ironic that!)

This is the sort of behaviour that normal City fans wouldn’t have taken part in. Unfortunately with new investment comes new idiot fans, who have probably never paid a blind bit of notice to City before they had their money. Now all of a sudden they are a fully paid up member of the Manchester City fan club.

It happens all over the country as soon as a team has any success at all these glory hunters come out in droves.  The sort of fan that doesn’t even know any of the players or even the rules of the game sometimes.

Rollercoaster

Proper Manchester City have been on an incredible rollercoaster in the last 20 years. They have been to the third tier of football and back. The sensible and loyal City fans who stuck with the club during the dark days deserve the glory days that comes their way.

However those only interested in City because they are now a top club should take a long walk off a short pier because I don’t think anybody wants you in football. Just like the prawn sandwich brigade at Old Trafford, as Roy Keane once put it. The sort of fans that are more interested in the hospitality lounge than the game.

Reality

Some Manchester City fans really do need to take a reality check. Instead of having a go at other clubs you should be savouring the success that is currently engulfing you. You are now a top club and I hope the majority of you stay grounded.

It’s the same everywhere though Manchester United have success and their fans want to have a go at everybody else. Chelsea enjoy success and their fans think they are the kings of London. A small minority of Liverpool still think they are they superior because off their past glories.

I have to empathise that its only usually a small minority of these clubs fans though. I know a lot of football fans and most of them are intelligent and knowledgeable about the game. If you criticise other clubs people will want to have a go back and City are a big target because of he vast fortune they have spent building their side.

The old saying be nice to people on your way up because you may meet them on the way down is apt here. Manchester City are set for a glory period and I’m sure most of their fans will revel in it, as they have been starved of success.

However nothing lasts for ever, just ask Liverpool or Arsenal fans. Both clubs were once dominant forces in the English game and now their target of success is a place in the Champions League.

Humility

I know its exciting times at the Etihad Stadium but please City fans start acting with a little humility. I know most of you are level headed, knowledgeable football fans and hopefully you can enjoy your period of success.

However if you are one of those moronic fans, who just wants to slag other clubs off on forums please go back under whichever rock you crawl from under because quite frankly you are not welcome in our game.

Are these morons really Manchester City fans?

I agree totally with you as I have listened to the same. I have had a season ticket for 25 years now and as I come from and live in London have been through the so called bad times with city.
At the recent city v fulham game, there were more londoners in the city end than Manchester fans. Where were they when city were going to Grimsby? As I don’t remember them on the train I went on!
The true blues ( I include myself as I have been to the best and worst of grounds and have a true love ) are not band wagon jumpers like the ex Chelsea, Blackburn or glory hunting reds that are now arriving.

Stig, I salute you. You sound like a real Manchester City fan, not one of these plastic fans I was talking about in my article. Fans like you deserve the sort of success that is heading your way.
