Manchester City go top as Manchester United draw at Liverpool

In the early Premier League kick-off Liverpool and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Anfield.

The game was a tight one until Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard drilled a low free-kick past David de Gea in the 68th minute.

Liverpool looked in control of the game until the 81st minute. Danny Welbeck flicked a corner on and substitute Javier Hernandez nipped in to head home. In the end the result was probably a fair one.

Manchester City moved above their city rivals to the top of the table with a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa. City took the lead in the 28th minute from a superb eight yard overhead kick from striker Mario Balotelli.

Adam Johnson doubled the home sides lead in the 47th minute, capitalising on a Stephen Warnock mistake to slide the ball past Shay Given. City centre-back Vincent Kompany headed home City’s third from a Adam Johnson corner in the 52nd minute.

Stephen Warnock got a goal back for the visitors in the 65th minute before former-Villan James Milner curled home a superb 20 yard effort to restore City’s three goal lead. City now face a difficult Champions League encounter with Villarreal on Tuesday.

Elsewhere Norwich claimed a 3-1 victory over fellow Premier League new boys Swansea City at Carrow Road. The home side took the lead in the first minute as Anthony Pilkington lashed home from a knock down by Steve Morison.

Norwich doubled their lead in the 10th minute as Russell Martin headed home from David Fox’s free-kick. Swansea pulled a goal back just two minutes later as Danny Graham fired an effort into the corner of the net from Scott Sinclair’s cross.

Norwich secured all three points in the 64th minute, Anthony Pilkington finishing off inside the penalty area after good play from Bradley Johnson. The scoring finished there and the Canaries claimed a deserve victory.

QPR and Blackburn drew 1-1 at Loftus Road in an entertaining encounter. The home side were in front on 16 minutes as Heidar Helguson’s cross-cum-shot beat Paul Robinson in the Rovers goal. The visitors equalised in the 24th minute courtesy of a Christopher  Samba header from a Jason Lowe corner.

Both sides had their chances to win the game but neither could find a breakthrough. QPR had a good claim for a penalty when Adel Taarabt felt he was fouled in the area. However the officials disagreed.

Bolton claimed a vital 3-1 victory at Lancashire neighbours Wigan. The visitors took the lead in the 4th minute as midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker manage to get his chest on a Chris Eagles cross. The home side were on level terms in the 40th minute as midfielder Mohamed Diame curled home a superb effort from just outside the penalty area.

Bolton were back in front on the stroke of half-time as striker David Ngog scored from close range after good play from Kevin Davies. And the visitors secured all three points in injury-time, midfielder Chris Eagles curling home an effort from close range.

Two late goals ensured that Stoke defeated Fulham 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium. Striker Jonathan Walters scored the 80th minute opener from close-range after a slight scramble inside the Fulham box. And the Potters secured all three points with just three minutes remaining midfielder Rory Delap heading home from a free-kick.

Chelsea defeated Everton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea took the lead in the 30th minute striker Daniel Sturridge scoring from close range from an Ashley Cole cross. Chelsea doubled their lead just before half-time after John Terry headed past a stranded Tim Howard. Brazilian midfielder Ramires slid home Juan Mata’s pinpoint cross to make it three for the home side.

Young Everton substitute Apostolos Vellios  slid home from a Royston Drenthe centre to give Everton a consolation goal. The Greek youngster had been on the pitch for less than a minute. Chelsea consolidated third place in the Premier League with this victory.
