Manchester City currently lead the Premier League by 11 points over eternal rivals Manchester United, and Pep Guardiola’s side are doing their best impression of the 2003/4 Invincibles. With the best goal scoring record, and the joint best defensive record, in the league, there is little that the footballing giants can do to better their position.
Leading from the front for the rest of the season, as well as challenging for the Champions League, will put a lot of pressure on the City squad however, and both John Stones and Benjamin Mendy have already been side-lined for the long term through injury. With that in mind, Guardiola is looking for a new central defender to bolster his back line.
The two men that City have in mind are Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk and Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez, according to the Guardian. Their interest in the former will certainly come as a shock to Liverpool, who have been chasing the Dutchman vigorously since the summer.
Martinez meanwhile has established himself as one of Spain’s top defenders, and at 26-years of age he is coming into his prime just in time for a potential Premier League switch.
