The Independent understands that Manchester City are ready to turn their attention to Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson in their pursuit of a new centre back.
City’s top target is West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans though the Midlands side rejected an initial £18m bid.
With fears that they may be holding out for close to £30m, Gibson may prove to be a more affordable alternative.
The England U21 international, who scored in Boro’s 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest at the weekend has also been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer though the North Londoners have themselves opted to pursue other targets.
Gibson has racked up one hundred and fifty-seven appearances in all competitions for Middlesbrough, scoring three goals, and with them achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2016.
He was however unable to help them retain their top flight status, with the North East side finishing in nineteenth place last season.
