Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is looking to add some fresh faces to his midfield as David Silva, Fernadinho and Yaya Toure are all past the 30-year mark. Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred has been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad, but Manchester Evening News now report that Guardiola has decided not to continue his pursuit of the Brazilian having missed out on signing him in January, but to turn his attention to Napoli’s Jorginho instead.
City face competition from the likes of local rivals Manchester United as well as the Champions League semi-finalists Liverpool, but the fresh Premier League title-winners will fancy their chances nonetheless.
This development could see Jose Mourinho get an easier path to signing Fred for United, should the Portuguese manager decide to do so. The Old Trafford outfit also need midfield reinforcements with Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini’s contract about to expire this summer.
