Manchester United back in for Hummels

Manchester United are ready to reignite their interest in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to the Mirror.

The Premier League side failed to capture the World Cup winner in the summer, and manager Louis van Gaal is ready to capitalise on Dortmund’s woes with a £35m bid.

The 2012 Bundesliga champions are currently joint bottom of the German top flight after winning just four of their seventeen games so far this season.

Hummels has been with the club January 2008, when he moved to them initially on loan from Bayern Munich, and is closing in on two hundred and fifty club appearances for them in all competitions.

Van Gaal is keen to strengthen his defence this month, with constant question marks over the fitness of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

They have also been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin, and could turn to him if they again fail to finalise a deal for Hummels.
