Darwin Nunez tuned up the already lively interest in his services by scoring for Benfica in their 1-3 defeat to Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. The Merseysiders are said to be one of the clubs monitoring the situation, but David Ornstein of The Athletic now reports that it’s actually Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain who lead the race.
The scouts that have been watching Nunez for a while now are apparently impressed with his work-rate as much as his finishing. The 22-year-old striker has so far scored 31 goals in 36 matches in all competitions this season.
Benfica are open to the prospect of selling Nunez this summer. They will hold talks with interested parties in the coming weeks, preferring to conclude any potential business early in order to have enough time to secure a proper replacement. The price is expected to be around €70 million.
Potential suitors will have the opportunity of seeing Nunez in action against Liverpool again on Wednesday, this time at Anfield, as his team attempt to overturn the first-leg deficit against the odds.
