Manchester United face North West rivals Wigan on Wednesday, knowing that they lead the race for the Premier League title by eight points.
Manchester City have crumbled in recent months and have allowed their arch-rivals to take almost complete control of the title race.
Form
Manchester United have a very handy habit of finding good form when it comes towards the end of campaigns.
United have now won nine and drew one of their last ten Premier League games. That is definitely league title winning form.
Manchester United’s consistency has been the difference between the Red Devils and their city rivals Manchester City, who have struggled under the weight of expectation.
Average
This Manchester United team is often described as average and I think that’s a good description of the current United team. A lot of the current players wouldn’t have got into the great United teams of the past.
In fact the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were in some of those great modern teams, but they were much younger in those days. They are both very much in the twilight of their careers, yet have played a role in what looks like United’s latest title triumph.
Signings
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson strengthened his squad this summer, after the clubs 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in last seasons Champions League final. The Scot realised that his squad wasn’t strong enough and needed more players.
Although Fergie brought in David de Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young, United were even poorer in Europe this season, going out of the Champions League in the group stage and only making it through one stage of the Europa League.
However the new signings have ensured that Manchester United have been strong enough to stay ahead of their rivals in the domestic game.
Both Jones and De Gea are young and were likely to have ups and downs in their first season at United. Jones enjoyed a good run earlier in the season but has suffered a slight dip in form recently.
Young Spaniard De Gea had a rather uncertain start to his United career, as people questioned whether he was good enough to play for the champions. However in the last few months the young Spaniard has hit form and played his part in United’s good run of form.
Spirit
A lot of credit must go to Sir Alex Ferguson for keeping this set of players focused and keeping the spirit in his squad high. The spirit in the United squad is extremely high and it’s been one of the key factors in United staying at the top of the English game for so long.
Arch-rivals Manchester City have proved that their team spirit isn’t strong enough to see them over the finish line. United’s winning mentality and team spirit has been the difference between the two Manchester teams.
Champions
If Manchester United win the Premier League title then they will have deserved it. This seasons Manchester United’s team may not be the best in the history of the club but they deserve the crown just for their spirit and doggedness.
