Manchester United are expected to challenge for the Premier League title in the coming campaign, but suddenly they look short of forward options.
Dutch striker Robin van Persie is expected to complete a move to Fenerbahce in the next few days, which leaves the Red Devils in need of fresh attacking blood.
Short
If as expected Van Persie completes his move away from the Red Devils in the next week then United boss Louis van Gaal will have just Wayne Rooney, James Wilson and Javier Hernandez as central attacking options.
Hernandez has just returned from a loan spell with Real Madrid and arrived back in Manchester with a broken collarbone.
New big money signing Memphis Depay has the ability to play up front, but has played on the left wing for most of his career, including last season when he helped PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title.
The lack of striking options means that United boss Van Gaal is likely to be looking at bringing in new attacking options this summer.
Options
The player who is being heavily link with a move to United at the moment is Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.
The Daily Star are claiming that the Red Devils are set to launch a massive £60million bid for the World Cup winner once the £4.7million sale of Van Persie is complete.
Muller is without doubt one of the most lethal forwards in front of goal. Muller has won the biggest trophies that the game has to offer at both club and international level.
Last season Muller scored 21 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Bayern, despite playing in his usual variety of different positions. When used as a central striker Muller found the net an impressive 13 times in 21 appearances and also produced seven assists.
The 25-year-old may be brought in mainly as a striking addition, but his ability to play anywhere across the front line is a very useful one to have.
His German club are unlikely to be willing to sell one of their key players, so United may have to look at alternative targets. One of those alternative targets could be Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed an unbelievable rise from virtually unknown to Premier League star in less than year. Kane scored 31 goals in 51 appearances for Spurs last season in all competitions and also won the English Young Player of the Year award.
Kane has been heavily linked with a £40million move, but the striker has stated himself that he is happy at White Hart Lane. His debut campaign in the English top-flight was no doubt extraordinary and on paper he looks like he would be an excellent addition to the United squad.
PSG striker Edinson Cavani is a player that has long been linked with a move to the Premier League. The Uruguayan striker has often been pushed out on to the wing in the French capital, so that Zlatan Ibrahimovic can play as a central striker.
Noises coming out of the French club suggest that Cavani is growing increasingly restless at PSG and he wants to move on. Whether United would consider Cavani as an ideal signing or not his summer remains to be seen.
Another player from Ligue One that could be available this summer is Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette, who has also been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal this summer.
There are reports that the France international striker, who scored 31 goals in all competitions last season, could be set to put in a transfer request at Lyon. The 24-year-old is regarded as one of the deadliest number nines in the European game.
United could face stiff competition if the £28million-rated striker did become available though, as he is also believed to be on the radar of United’s north west rivals Liverpool this summer.
Outsiders
Even before the apparent lack of strikers Manchester United were considered as outsiders for the Premier League title in the coming season. The Red Devils really do need to add to their striking options if they are to mount a serious title challenge in the new campaign.
