Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia has signed a new contract until June 2018 with the Portuguese giants, the Eagles have revealed on their officials website.
Francisco Javier Garcia Fernandez decided to sign a contract extension with Benfica in spite of the growing interest from major European clubs.
Manchester United and few other clubs have been linked with the Spaniard and the Red Devils were expected to step up their interest in the summer, but it is now clear that Garcia will not be leaving La Luz any time soon.
“I want to thank the club and the president for heavily relying on me and I hope this link with Benfica will continue for years to come,” Garcia told Benfica TV.
The defensive midfielder is a product of Real Madrid youth school, but he was never given a real chance at Santiago Bernabeu, having featured in just three league games for los Blancos before joining Osasuna.
Garcia soon returned for a second spell at Real Madrid, but was quickly sold to Benfica for a fee of €7 million.
The 25-year-old has proved to be an instant hit at La Luz and is now regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in Europe.
