According to Sport, Manchester United are targeting Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.
There have been plenty of reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho is looking to sign a top-level centre-back. Only a few days ago the club were linked with Real Madrid’s Rapheal Varane, but Sport claim their first-choice target is actually Umtiti.
Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday with both Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly putting in solid displays despite Bailly scoring an own-goal, but both of them have struggled with injuries over the two seasons they’ve played together, as is the case with the first-choice backup option Phil Jones.
Known for his knack for defensive stability, Mourinho will be looking to strengthen further in that department.
On the other hand, with Umtiti in their ranks, Barcelona look much better defensively themselves, and they won’t be will to part with the 24-year-old cheap, if at all. But Umtiti is now demanding a significant pay-rise, one that would reflect his development since joining the Catalan club.
