Manchester United have won their first trophy of the season, as Portsmouth were defeated on penalties to take the Community Shield.

Last season’s Premiership and FA Cup winners faced each other to decide who would get to take home this season’s first trophy, but neither side managed to force a decision in regular time.

Eventually, penalties were needed to make an end to this clash and United were by far the better team from the spot.

Both Diarra and Johnson struck their efforts over the crossbar and Mvuemba had his spot kick saved by goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

The Mancunians were more successful, with Tevez, Giggs and Carrick all converting their penalties.

Interestingly, United have now won all of their last four Community Shields by beating their opponents on penalties.
