Manchester United have withdrawn from their stated intention to appeal against the four match ban and fine imposed on Patrice Evra following the altercation after the Chelsea game last season.
The club released a statement saying,
“Patrice accepts the suspension, but categorically denies hitting anyone. Since playing in the Premier League, he has enjoyed a good disciplinary record, having never been dismissed, something which the panel acknowledged. To serve a ban which is longer than one imposed for a career-threatening tackle or throwing an object into the crowd indicates that the disciplinary commission made a very poor decision.”
That’s pretty strong stuff from the club and follows on from Sir Alex Ferguson saying,
“This is the worst decision I have ever known. A lot of people have been ringing about it because it is the most incredible decision in my time at this club. The FA have done many things but this is absolutely beyond me.”
So if they feel that strongly about it, and the point about the length of the ban is certainly a valid one, why are they not pursuing their appeal?
Would it be too cynical or too much of a conspiracy theory to suggest it could be linked to the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo was cleared by the FA yesterday?
