Mancini: Bridge is committed to England

(GSM) – Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini thinks Wayne Bridge will not have any problems in representing England in the wake of the John Terry saga.

Bridge could start for England in next month’s preparatory friendly against Egypt after first-choice left-back Ashley Cole broke his ankle during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat against Everton on Wednesday.

And given that Cole should be out for 3 months and will have to face a race to prove his fitness as this summer’s World Cup edges close, Bridge could be in line for a first-team place with England in South Africa.

Many have suggested that the private-life issues that have headlined the media would make it impossible for John Terry and Wayne Bridge to play in the same team. However, Mancini does not see a problem.

“He never told me that he wouldn’t play for England,” said the Italian.

“The national team is important. I have not spoken to him but I think, if he is picked, he will play.”

The City boss says Bridge is totally committed to England as it would be important for his career to play at the World Cup.

“He is committed to playing for England,” stressed Mancini.

“It is important for any player to play at the World Cup. It is important for their career, especially if they can play in the first XI.”

Mancini also said that Bridge is not fully-fit yet. He has played only two matches since his recovery from a knee injury sustained against his former club, Chelsea, in December.

“Wayne is a good man,” said Mancini. “But he has only just recovered and it still maybe at around 60 per cent.”
