Diego Maradona makes no secret of his desire to take over the reigns at Boca Juniors, and there are reports the club officials are warming up to the idea of hiring the former World Cup legend.
Boca Juniors vice-president Juan Carlos Crespi recommended Maradona at a club meeting as Los Xeneizes look to replace Claudio Borghi, who resigned from the post after the Superclasico defeat to River.
Reserve team coach Roberto Pompei will be in charge of the team for the last two games of the Apertura championship, meaning the club officials will have enough time to choose Borghi’s successor.
Maradona has now emerged as one of the hot favourites for the job and he says he would do everything to become Boca coach.
“I would die to be Boca’s coach. First though, there are many things to talk about to many different people,” said Maradona.
The first thing Maradona would need to do should he get the job is sort out his disagreement with Boca’s only true star that is Juan Roman Riquelme.
“I do not want to put pressure on (Riquelme) and make him leave Boca on my account. I am not going to rush the kid but we would definitely need to meet each other before and have a long, frank discussion.”
