Mark Schwarzer has said that Leeds United should have signed Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

The former Fulham and Chelsea goalkeeper rates Martinez highly, and he believes that promoted Premier League club Leeds should have signed Martinez from the Gunners before he joined Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

The Villans recently secured the signing of Argentine goalkeeper from Premier League rivals Arsenal for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million.

Schwarzer has given his take on Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who made his loan move from Lorient permanent earlier this summer.

The former Middlesbrough star does not seem to rate the 20-year-old Frenchman highly.

The former Australia international goalkeeper told Optus Sport: “The goalkeeper doesn’t look good enough for me. He looks very very average. He conceded a couple of goals against Fulham (he shouldn’t have).

“He’s a French U21 international, he played the back end of last season (and) they made his move permanent. I think that is maybe where Leeds are going to come unstuck.

“I think Leeds United have missed a massive trick in not being able to sign (Emiliano) Martinez. I didn’t see anything in the press in terms of more seriousness about it, but I think they made the decision relatively early (that) they were going to go with their current crop of keepers.”

Strong start to the season

Leeds won automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of last season and have made a strong start to the 2020-21 Premier League campaign.

Following a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool away from home at Anfield, the Whites got the better of Fulham 4-3 at Elland Road in the league last weekend.

Leeds are back in action on Sunday when they take on Sheffield United away from home in the Premier League, and, according to Betfair, they are 13/8 to pick up all three points from the Yorkshire derby.
