Rafael Marquez is about to sign a new deal with FC Barcelona, one that should keep the Mexican defender at the Catalan giants until 2014.

Barcelona recently announced to want to renegotiate the contracts of some of their biggest stars such as Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes and Samuel Eto’o. Marquez, one of the side’s most consistent players since joining in 2003, appears to be first in line to come to a new agreement.

The 29-year-old began his career at Mexican side CF Atlas in 1996 and moved to Europe to join AS Monaco three years later. After four years in France, he eventually tried his luck at Barcelona.

Since 2003, Marquez helped Barcelona to win two domestic league titles and the Champions League in 2006.
