Lorik Cana declared Marseille’s ‘ambition to reach the final’ after their thrilling penalty shoot-out win over Twente Enschede saw them into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

“It was tough to come here and get a result as Twente didn’t win at the Stade Vélodrome by accident,” said Cana, who captained OM in his first game since picking up a knee injury in the Week 19 league defeat to Nancy on 20 December. “We’ve put things right now, and we deserve our place in the last 16.

“We’ve got ambitions of doing something in this competition. We showed solidarity in both attack and defence, and Hatem’s genius paid off. This match will kickstart our season. We’re going to become even more ambitious. We want to reach the final, and this game will help us. We may have put in a lot of effort, but we’ve gained in mental strength.”
