Marseille coach Erik Gerets went public with two regrets after his side’s 2-1 victory over Dutch club Ajax in the Uefa Cup Round of 16 tie at the Stade Vélodrome. Gerets was disappointed to have conceded the away goal, and that his side didn’t score more.
Gerets said: “Winning at the Vélodrome is important and we deserved it. I have but two regrets; the goal we conceded, and the fact that we didn’t score more goals.
“Van Basten made the right tactical choice at 10 v 11. He could have gone 4-4-1 but he preferred to leave the right side open as he knew we weren’t doing anything there. I take my hat off to him. But Mamadou Niang and Jérôme Bonnart had chances and we could have scored three or four.”
