Marseille midfelder Mathieu Valbuena has decided to stay with the club after turning down the opportunity to move away from the French Ligue 1, with clubs such as Liverpool and Atletico Madrid said to be interested in the young star.
Valbuena was told by coach Didier Deschamps that he did not feature in his sides plans for the season, alerting the attention of numerous European clubs.
However, after being brought on as a substitute on Sunday the midfielder has decided to stay and fight for a place in the first team.
Valbuena told France Football: “I’m happy to announce that I’ve taken the decision to stay at Marseille and refuse several offers from French and foreign clubs.”
“I just really want to stay. It should be pointed out that this club really values me and make me want to do great things for them.”
Valbuena impressed under former coach Eric Gerets and scored 7 goals in 75 games before falling out favour under new coach Deschamps. The midfielder will be remembered by fans in England for his stunning goal against Liverpool in last years UEFA Champions League group stages at Anfield.
