PARIS (AFP) – Marseille chairman Jean-Claude Dassier said Tuesday the club had reached agreement with Toulouse to sign Andre-Pierre Gignac, but that there was no progress on a possible Newcastle switch for midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.
“We have reached agreement with the player but there also has to be agreement with the club,” Dassier told AFP regarding a move for France international Gignac, who is currently injured.
French champions Marseille, having lost Senegalese forward Mamadou Niang to Fenerbahce earlier Tuesday, need to regroup swiftly after losing their opening two league matches.
Regarding Hatem Ben Arfa, who is determined to leave the club, Dassier said there was “no news from Newcastle.”
He added that Marseille were not trying to hold the player to ransom by demanding an exorbitant fee as “I have no intention of wrecking his career.”
The 23-year-old French international has been told he will not be released to play in the English Premier league with Chris Hughton’s newly-promoted side and has reacted by refusing to take part in Marseille’s early-season action.
