Beating Arsenal in the Carling Cup quarter-finals could be just the boost struggling Wigan need according to manager Roberto Martinez.
Wigan beat Swansea 2-0 in the fourth round of the Cup, but will face a much different prospect when they travel to the Emirates on Tuesday.
And with 14 places separating the sides in the Premier League, Martinez believes a win over Arsene Wenger’s side could revive Wigan’s season.
“It means to have the right approach, to face one of the best teams in European football and obviously getting into the quarter-final of the Carling Cup is always a nice journey,” Martinez said.
“We enjoyed that (beating Swansea in the third round), we had great emotions, we had great feelings and we are going to carry on with that.”
However, Martinez said his side would need to improve considerably after their 3-1 defeat against bottom side West Ham on Saturday, particularly given the calibre of their upcoming opposition.
“Obviously the disappointment on Saturday means that we need to react mentally in the right way and make sure we can enjoy the occasion and perform at the level we have shown this season. That’s what we are looking for really.”
“We all know that whoever plays for Arsenal, they are going to play in a very specific way.”
“They are fascinating to watch, they are really entertaining. They are just masters at it, they are just fantastic at it.”
“We know they are going to be a difficult team and all we want is to work hard as a team, do what we have to do and then make sure we create problems for Arsenal as well.”
