Martinez keen for McCarthy stay

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is keen to tie James McCarthy down to a new contract, according to the Mirror.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the midfielder, with Arsene Wenger keen to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, Martinez has no intentions of parting company with the 24 year old, who like his manager swapped Wigan Athletic for the Toffees last summer.

The Republic of Ireland international has made fifty-five appearances for the Merseyside club, with his one and only goal so far coming in the 2-0 win at Hull City on the final day of last season.

He has been capped twenty-four times for his country, while he was part of the Wigan squad that beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley eighteen months ago.

Everton lost to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday to fall four points behind the Champions League qualification places.
