Roberto Martinez says he will use Wigan Athletic’s League Cup clash with Nottingham Forest as an opportunity for fringe players to impress.
Wigan beat promoted Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday for their first win of the English Premier League season following defeat to Chelsea in the previous round.
And Wigan manager Martinez has said he will give those who did not feature in either of those games the chance to force their way into his plans.
“We’ve got three games in this busy week,” Martinez said.
“You’re going to see a lot of players given an opportunity to show what they can do and that is a competitive edge we have in this group. It’s a great opportunity to share the demands.
“You’ve got a few players that have been working really well in pre-season and they’ve no reward yet and I think it’s important that everyone is ready.
“It’s an opportunity for some other players to show what they can do and show that they can have a massive say this season.”
David Jones, Ben Watson, Callum McManaman and Mauro Boselli are among the players who could get starts, while regulars Gary Caldwell and James McCarthy are likely to miss out.
Jean Beausejour also made his return from a hamstring injury on Saturday and could be set to feature in midweek.
