Mata linked with return to Spain

The Independent understands that Manchester United are in talks with Atletico Madrid over the possible transfer of Juan Mata.

The Spain international, who is also attracting interest from China, moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea just over two years ago and whilst impressing in parts he has failed to recreate the form that saw him named the Blues’ Player of the Year in successive seasons.

He has so far racked up eighty-six appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, scoring twenty-two times.

He also has thirty-nine caps for his country, scoring ten times while he was part of the squads that won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships.

Louis van Gaal’s side lost to struggling Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, but remain six points behind the top four and can now be backed at 9/2 to finish the season in the Champions League qualification places.
