Mata urges Chelsea caution

Juan Mata has warned his Chelsea team-mates of complacency ahead of their match against Tottenham.

Chelsea are enjoying a slight resurgence after winning four games in a row before coming away from the Eithad Stadium empty handed after losing 2-1 against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Spurs, meanwhile, are suffering their worst run of the season after picking up just one point from a possible 12.

However, Mata has dismissed the negative atmosphere around White Hart Lane and has underlined the danger Spurs will pose.

“It’s going to be very difficult. Tottenham have a great squad and a great manager who has lots of experience in the Premier League,” Mata told the club’s official website.

“They are in front of us in the league for a reason, because up to now they have been better.

“Tottenham are a very complete team. We have to be aware of their attackers like (Gareth) Bale and (Luka) Modric.

“Just because they are going through a tough spell at the moment, doesn’t mean it will be easy.

“All good teams go through tough spells. Soon they will start another good spell.

“We just have to make sure it doesn’t start tomorrow.”

Mata reportedly came close to joining Tottenham last summer before arriving at Stamford Bridge, and he has been taken aback by the nature of the rivalry between the two clubs.

“I knew that they were rivals, but I didn’t know that they were rivals with such intensity,” he said.

“From the game at White Hart Lane, the other players and the fans, I quickly found out what a passionate game it is.

“It’s an eagerly awaited game and a fantastic game to play in. I’m really looking forward to such an intense atmosphere.”
